Ships cannon were large long-range weapons mounted on the decks of ships. They were used primarily in naval warfare to disable or sink enemy vessels. The earliest cannon were made of bronze or iron and fired stone or iron balls. As technology advanced, they were capable of firing explosive shells. Cannons were typically grouped together in broadside batteries or arranged along the upper decks of a ship. They required a crew to load and fire them and were often operated by skilled gunners who calculated trajectories and adjusted for wind and other factors. Cannons remained a primary tool in naval warfare until the improvements in naval ordnance led to their eventual obsolescence in the 19th century. Today, the use of large cannons on ships is mostly limited to ceremonial occasions or historical reenactments.
